The Power of the Tongue
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs, 18:21)
Have you ever walked away from a conversation feeling like you could conquer the world? Have you ever had a conversation with someone who made you feel very good about yourself and challenged you to become your best? On the other hand, have you ever ended a conversation feeling very defeated and depressed? My reason for posing these three questions is simple...to establish the importance of effective communication, and the power of the use of the tongue.
The other day, a friend and I were having a conversation. As we continued our discussion, I began to speak words of wisdom and life to her. Not realizing that she had been going through some very challenging times, she began to weep as I continued to uplift and encourage her. At the end of our conversation, she embraced me and thanked me for restoring a sense of hope in her life. What I thought was simple, basic dialogue had turned out to be a very powerful, uplifting therapeutic session. This scenario is living proof that after talking with someone, you can walk away feeling very powerful and charged, or you can walk away feeling crushed, depressed and even sometimes, defeated. Our words are very powerful tools, and we have the freedom to utilize them any way we choose.
I challenge you today to speak positive words over your own life and the lives of others. Try it for just one month and watch the changes begin to occur. Remember that words can heal and words can kill. Words can lift and words can bless. Words can build and words can destroy. Which of these would you choose?
Until next time, be blessed and continue to be a blessing to others.
